If you want to turn on Network Discovery on a computer that is running Windows, you have to change the Advanced sharing settings in Network and Sharing Center. But the changes are not saved. Hence you can’t turn on Network Discovery and get the following problems:

  • You cannot access shared files and folders or browse computers on a local network.
  • You cannot browse or look for any network shares.

Here is the basic reasons cause to this problem:

  • Windows Firewall blocking Network Discovery.
  • The dependency services for Network Discovery are not running.

If you cannot turn on Network Discovery, you may try to follow these steps below

How To Fix Can’t Turn on Network Discovery and File Sharing

Step 1. Press Windows Key + R, then type services.msc and tap Enter to open Services Manager.
Step 2. When Services Manager opens, you locate following dependency services:

  • DNS Client.
  • Function Discovery Resource Publication.
  • SSDP Discovery.
  • UPnP Device Host.

Make sure that they are started and set to Automatic. if it’s not, change it.

Step 3. Now you need to configure the Windows firewall to let Network Discovery. To do that, follow these steps:

  • Go to Control Panel, select System and Security, and then click Windows Firewall.
  • In the left pane, click Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall if you are running Windows 7/8/10 or Windows Server 2012.
  • Select Change settings. If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  • Choose Network discovery, then click OK to save changes.
  • Configure other firewalls in the network to allow Network Discovery.

Step 4. Now you try again to turn on network discovery in Network and Sharing Center.
